How you restore lost data will depend a great deal on what type of backup was used. Let's look at a few common backup systems and how you would restore using them.
1. XP Backup
This is an internal backup that uses its own compressed file type. It's easy to use with the supplied wizard. When you are backing up you can choose the option of backing up your entire drive, your "my documents", or choosing specific files using the custom option. You are then able to select where these files will be backed up to.
When it comes time to restore you use the same wizard. You can restore your entire drive [if you backed it up], all of your data files or any individual files within that backup, or any of the custom files you backed up. The process is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
2. Online Backup
If you are using an online backup service you will have set up a scheduled backup time as well as choose the files you wish to backup. Using a scheduled backup is a prime and time-saving option.
When it comes time to restore the data you would log in using your user ID and password. Then you would choose the files that you want to restore; generally you will be asked to confirm, and that's all there is to it. They are restored to your computer.
3. VXA Tape Backup
Your tape backup will have software that comes with it. This is the software you use to choose whether you are doing a full backup or an incremental backup or specific file. Software is designed for ease of use.
When it comes time to do a restore you will use the same software but you will choose the restore command from the menu rather than the backup. Choose which files you are going to be backing up or if it's a full backup choose that selection.
Now that you are familiar with these three common backup options and you know how to restore lost data from them, you should feel confident that you are ready for a computer disaster.
