What Is a Backup Utility?

Just about every method of backing up uses some form of a backup utility. Not sure what that is? It is the software that makes it easy to achieve your backup.

If you are using the Windows XP Backup program, it comes with a wizard that walks you through the entire process. And it also has advanced capabilities should you need them. You use this same wizard to restore your data should a problem arise. You can do full backups, incremental backups, differential backups, and custom backups.

If you are using a tape backup it will come with software to do your backups. You will even be able to do some scheduling if you like. This software is generally designed for ease of use with most backups as everything today works in the Windows environment.

You will be able to do full backups, incremental backups, differential backups, and custom backups. You will also be able to assign backup times, user access rights, as well as a host of other options depending on which software it is.

If you are using an online backup service they will provide you with software that you will use to interface with their backup system. The biggest benefit to this type of backup is that it is offsite. Being automated is another advantage, meaning it backs up at a specific time and date without you having to press any more buttons.

If you are backing up to CD you can either use the interface provided by XP or you can use a third party utility such as NERO. The XP interface is as easy as 1, 2, 3 to use. Just drag and drop the files you want; then when you are done, the Windows backup utility opens and instructs you to place your compact disc in the drive, select write or burn to disc and off it goes.

Every backup utility will be slightly different but they will all share some basic functionality; assisting you with sets of directions so that your tape backup goes off without a hitch.

Some will be easier than others to use so if you aren't sure, why not ask around and see what others recommend. You can also search online and read reviews to help you make your final decision. A backup utility should be found at every computer user's desk.
