Your computer crashes and suddenly all of your data is gone. That big project due tomorrow - gone! If you've done your backups correctly you will have nothing to worry about. There are many types of computer backup systems to choose from.
CD / DVD
CD-ROM's and DVD's are two of the simplest and cheapest backup options available. They are also very easy to use and backups are done very quickly. However they do have limited capacity so they are only a good choice for backing up specific files or perhaps for home use. They are not an option for mirroring an entire drive.
Secondary Hard drive
Data can be backed up to a secondary hard drive which is either internal or external. You can mirror an entire drive using a secondary drive maintaining a complete duplicate of your hard drive. Backing up in this manner is quick because after the first backup you simply copy any changes that occur. The disadvantage of an internal drive is that it is not as portable. Portability gives you the ability to store the data in another location in case of a fire or in case someone breaks into your office and steals your desktop or server. Thus, an external drive can be a much better choice.
Online Backups
Here's an excellent choice for the company that needs to ensure security and protection of personal information. Large amounts of storage are available at reasonable pricing and you instantly get offsite storage as well. You can automate the system or manually do your backups. Mirroring your drive is no problem and you can configure the settings to backup only files that have changed, making backups a very quick and easy process. An online or remote computer backup system is great choice for medium to large businesses or even for the home computer user looking to backup personal pictures and documents.
