Backup Your Rack Mount Server

Just as you would backup your stand alone computer or network server you need to backup your rack mount server too.

For those of you who don't know what a rack mount is, it's the perfect solution for when you need to store many servers into a tight space.

Rack mounts are popular around the globe from 3D render farms to video editing suites to telecom systems. These systems are designed to fit comfortably onto an open computer rack. They are designed for their space-saving features.

A rack mount can provide you with valuable space and a rack mount server is the perfect choice for tight spaces. Don't get confused into thinking you require any different backup functionality than with a regular server. There are a couple of backup options you can consider.

Use any one of the backup options available to you. Consider using a tape backup. You can start with a full backup and then do incremental backups during the week and a full backup again at the beginning of the week. Or you can do continuous full backups or file specific backups.

If your budget allows, be sure to check out the new VXA packet technology. This is the first tape backup to come to market with a zero tolerance for error. It uses digital packets which are much faster to read and write, and they are able to do a fix on the fly. This technology is worth every penny and isn't as expensive as you might think.

You might also consider using one of the many online backup services. You get scheduled backups, backups every time files change, and you get storage offsite which takes care of another critical element. This is a very affordable option and it takes away the pressure of having to make sure you get those backups done.

Whichever you choose to backup your rack mount server really doesn't matter; what does matter is that the backup happens on a regular basis so that when a disaster happens, big or small, you'll be prepared.
