Do It Yourself Server Backup

Backing up your own server is an easy task but the method that you will use depends on your backup needs. Your needs may include a hands-free timed backup or you may prefer a hands-on manual solution. If you haven't yet decided don't worry, you'll know what is best for you as you use the process.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 provides a reliable method to perform a server backup to an external hard drive, tape backup, or network shared drive. The Backup Configuration Wizard quickly and easily helps to guide you through the backup process.

You can configure the wizard to backup individual files or folders so that if one or more files gets accidentally deleted or corrupted you can restore just that file or folder. The wizard can also be configured to restore only one area of your server's hard drive, which saves you time in the event that the entire hard drive has not been corrupted.

After you have completed your backup, your results will be displayed in the task panel in the Server Manager area of the program. It will tell you whether your backup was successful or whether there were errors. You can also visit the backup log at any time to review the backup information in more detail. After running the wizard a few times, you'll get a feel for how you would like it to automatically perform the backup. Automating the process, is of course, the best way to keep your company or personal projects running smoothly.

In the event of a disaster, whether it is big or small, you can use the wizard to restore your most recent backup to your server. Whether your problems stem from a virus, hacker, improperly configured software, or hardware malfunctions, the wizard is the quickest way to restore your data.

While using the Windows Backup Wizard is the easiest way for you to backup your server, there are other options. If you choose to use third-party backup software, be sure it is compatible with your hardware drivers and your server's operating system.
