What Is A Tape Backup Device?

A tape backup device is similar to a regular audio cassette player or VCR in the way it works. However, rather than record audio or video, it is used to record and store a copy of data from a computer hard drive. This copy of data is kept as a backup of the data. The backup tape is then put away for safe storage as a backup in case anything happens to the data on the hard drive of your computer or server. Should something bad happen and you need to restore your data you need only to grab your tape, insert it into the tape device, and follow the restore procedure to get the data back up and running.

Tape backup devices have come down in price and are now affordable for businesses of all sizes. There are several methods that can be employed to do a backup. You can do a full backup, an incremental backup, or a differential backup. It's up to you to determine which method is best for you. The primary factors in deciding which type of backup to do is the amount of data you need to backup and the time required to backup that data.

It is very important that you set a scheduled time to do your backups on a regular basis. The reason for this is so if human error or hardware failure occurs, you will be able to retrieve your most recent data. Even better than scheduled backups is to implement an automated backup device such as a VXA tape autoloader. This device simplifies the process of backing up your data by automating the process of switching out the tapes.

Using a tape backup device offers other benefits over other backup options as well. Tape backup allows you to backup as much data as you desire, by simply purchasing additional tape cartridges. Also, by doing a tape backup and storing it off site you are more likely to have it available in the event of a fire, earthquake, or other major disaster.

These are just a few reasons why a tape backup device is a good investment for your company. Try the VXA tape drives, which use a revolutionary backup method that is much more reliable than traditional tape backups.
