Why Use Tape Cartridges for Data Backup and Storage?

There are a lot more options for backing up your important data, but tape cartridges are still one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to back up your data.

One of the benefits of using tape cartridges for data backup is that you are able to back up virtually unlimited volumes of data without having to continually purchase new hardware. As the size of your data grows, you can simply purchase more tape cartridges to accommodate the larger data backup requirements. Tape cartridges in various formats, including VXA, are available in very large sizes. By adding a tape cartridge autoloader, you can simplify the automation of your backup process.

By storing backup data on magnetic tape cartridges rather than a hard drive or other hardware, you are not relying on the hardware to restore your data. If your tape drive fails, you can simply use a different drive to access the data that is stored on the tape cartridge.

Another benefit of using tape cartridges for backup is that the cartridges are portable. This means that the backup tapes can be stored off-site in a secure location that will keep vital company data safe from theft, fire, or natural disaster.

The affordable cost of magnetic tape cartridges also makes it an attractive option to business owners. Small to mid-sized businesses are able to backup very large quantities of data at an affordable price.

One drawback to conventional tape backup systems is the unreliability of the data restore process. VXA technology offers a much more reliable system using data packets and a "perfect write" system that eliminates errors on the fly as the data is backed up to the tape cartridge. The VXA packet technology allows data to be restored even if part of the tape is damaged.
